First Day @ Business Objects
Finally , the most awaited day in early 2008 had come today . Yes , its the first day of my office @ Business objects . My internship offer with BO is from 7th January 2008 to 9th July 2008 .
Well , my day started at 5.45 am when the alarm rang loud and clear disturbing my sound sleep and dreams which was full of fantasy . I had to ... yes , I had to wake up because I was entering into professional life and had to be punctual from the very first day onwards . Got ready by 6.30 am and was waiting for my friends and my colleagues to get ready . In few minutes my colleagues Vamsi and Saurabh joined me and we started to move at 7 am in the chilly cold weather and said to ourselves " How long are we going to continue like this ? " coz getting up so early and facing the cold breeze was something which we weren't familiar with . Reached City Sagar ( Main Road ) , at 7.10 and boarded the city bus . Reached Silk board ( place where we had to change bus) at around 7.35 am and we got a bus which was heading towards Marathhalli . We boarded that bus and we got down near Intel office . On inquiring with my friend Chandu ( who earlier had seen my office ) told me that we had got down at the wrong place and we were ahead by around 1.5 - 2 kms from our office location . So started walking back and there wasn't any single auto rickshaw nearby . So walked the entire distance ... It was like a morning walk ... a bit late of course !
Reached BO office at around 8.10 am . In the offer letter they mentioned that BO is at 2nd floor at both Wings A & B . We went to Wing A and to our surprise the 2nd floor was under construction . Pehla jhatka ........
We decided to move to Wing B and this time there were no surprises ! We were at the right place finally . We were at the reception at 8.20 am . One of the HR person came and greeted us and asked us to wait for some more time at the reception . The temperature at the reception was so low that me and Vamsi were almost shivering and were thinking how we will bear this cold ? Adding to that we hadn't any pullover or Jerkins . After a long wait .... yes , after a long wait .... at around 10.30 am another HR , a lady .... stop stop ... don't start wondering ..... Sujatha ( HR , married ... looks avg ) came to us and took us inside and asked us to sit at one of the cubicles which was unoccupied . She returned back and asked to complete the formalities of signing the required documents . She then took each one of us to our respective reporting mangers under whom we would be working for the next 6 months .
My reporting manager was a lady in her 40s . She was Mrs Mangala Seshadri . She asked me to introduce myself . Then she explained what BO is all about and the department she was heading ... yes , that's my department too from now on . Its , Shared Services . BO has 4 development centers in the world . They are in : Vancouver ( VDC ) , Paris ( Headquarters ) , Shanghai ( SDC ) and in Bangalore called the IDC . She cited that I may get a work related to integration of BO applications / Suite or Research at BO ! Ohhhh ... my lord ! Great expectations and I have to meet them . She then informed that the exact problem and domain will be informed in a day or two .
I got my cubicle , Cubicle No : 2082 . But since the systems were not up , I was allotted a temporary cubicle ( Cubicle No : 2199 ) . I was given a document which was all about the BO's architecture . I started reading and jotted some points . At around 12. 45 pm , one of my project mates ( Mr . Joy ) took me to the food court for lunch . Expectations were high ..... but alas ! The setup was similar to what we have in our college , but but but ..... the food was good when compared to college food . After having my lunch , I met Vamsi and asked him about his 1st day experience . We shared our thoughts and on the day so far . Then i called up Nareen and asked him about his joining at BEA Web Logic . After a brief chat , we decided to get back to our work . As soon as I got back to my cubicle , I got a call from my friend and he informed that the HR wants all the interns to assemble in one of the Board Rooms . The HR talked about few " HR things " . When she said that the working days would be from Monday to Friday , we all sighed a big relief coz we thought that the job was 6 days a week ! Well , in all , 9 interns joined today . 3 from IIIT Bangalore , 3 from BITS Pilani , 2 from BITS Goa & 1 from NIT Suratkal . Out of nine , 7 of us were from Andhra Pradesh . Next reaction , ohh god ... Not again .... yes you guessed it right ..... In all these IT firms , the maximum percentage of the crowd are South Indians mostly AP . This fact can be proved by the fact and one incident which happened in the morning session . One guy who was sitting adjacent to my cubicle was offering Prasad to all his colleagues . He had returned from Shirdi today itself . So , everyone was coming to his cubicle and were having the prasad . Suddenly , one guy uttered in telugu " Enti ra mama ... Eppudu vachavu " ( Hi mate , when did you come ? ) ...... Bas .... thats it ! The very next moment , all the people around him were guys from Andhra Pradesh . My goodness ....
Well continuing with my earlier part of our interaction with HR in the post lunch session , we were taken around the office . Just to show where we could find all other resources like the pantry section , cafeteria , playing arena , Dormitories , Rest Rooms etc etc . After that , we headed towards our respective cubicles . I continued with my document reading and finished 2 chapters . To be more precise ( Page 19 - 58 ) . After I read the first two pages , I was feeling so sleepy coz this was something which I am not used to .... And adding to make the conditions worse for me the Airconditioners were showing all their might ! Somehow I managed to keep awake . At 5 pm , I went to my HR to report back . She asked me " So ... how was your day ? Any problems ? How are you going back ? " I was taken aback by her politeness and caring . I replied her back and asked whether I was done for the day ? She replied , you need not inform me . You can come and go anytime you want .
Thats it ! I called up Vamsi and we left for college . The journey was not as long as we thought . We boarded a direct bus from Belandur post to Electronics City . It took us just 40 mins to come back to the college !
So , the sun had set for the day ! After dinner , when everyone returned from their workplace ..... Everybody was sharing their first day's experience at their respective companies !
I tell you what , these are one of the incidents and discussions you should never miss . It is full of humor , information , expectations , disappointments .................. everything ... everything you would like to hear ! They have everything stored for you . Another such incident is when people are drunk and you are in their company having a orange juice or milkshakes or having cold drinks ! I will soon write a post on that ... Keep watching this space for it .
