Run for a cause !
There are things about running though, that define each and every one of us who runs regularly. Among many things, running takes determination, focus, and guts. This makes it a sport that relatively few people truly stick with in the long run (pun intended), and well-suited as a fundraising vehicle for causes from Diabetes to Arthritis to Leukemia…..just to name a few.
Last week , on the eve of Republic Day , ELCIA invited all the electronics city members to " Run for a cause " . The cause was to Run for the improvement of Bangalore infrastructure . The main objectives as mentioned in their poster were :
- To promote an awareness on the need for speedy infrastructure improvement in the city .
- To ensure that Bangaloreans appreciate the fast changing environment and adapt to it .
I don't know how this kind of objective was going to be achieved by a mere 3.5 / 7 km marathon but our objective was to get considerable exercise since we are into our internships and are just sitting at one place and having all the eatables provided by our respective companies ; Meaning : we were not having a good work out for our body and were growing fatter day by day and were becoming lazier.
The ELCIA president flagged off the event alongwith some national and international marathon winners at around 9.15 am . From our institute , 11 of us landed at the event . The persons who participated were : Myself , Nareen , Sashank , Ravindra , Ravikanth , Karthik , Dileep , Sandeep , Udaya , Abhilash and Vanamali . We all opted for 3.5 km marathon . We were astonished to see our opposite counterparts to take part in the race . Again , some were good enough to keep our spirits high and have a go at the run . As soon as the whistle blew , the crowd infact the marathon runners started to run as if it was a 100 / 200 m dash . But soon after they were puffing and were tired . We did run for around 1.5 - 2 km continuously and then started walking for a while . Ran a bit more , started walking . But as soon as we saw the end for the 3.5 km marathon , we told ourselves to run until we reach the end . The media team which was there to cover the run inspired the runners by taking videos and clicking photographs . Throughout the 3.5 km stretch , there were enough stalls which provided water , towels , glocose powders and Medical aids . When we reached the end , we were supplied lemon water to energise ourselves . The 7 km runners continued to run back on the same track . Buses were arranged to take back the runners back to the starting place . At the starting place , the breakfasts and energisers were kept ready as promised ! After having them , we returned back to our room and took enough rest so that we could play volleyball in the evening .
What the committe wanted to prove was not understood , but the run certainly proved us that we were no more cheerful and spirited youngsters who had enough stamina , but we were slowly turning and falling under the " uncles " category !
Some snaps ...
